My assistant playing in the mud whist I sketch.

I'm finding it hard to write a post, here's why:

I have a personal project, which is going well, but it is currently a secret except for those involved;
I have an illustration commission, which involves me traveling a little over the next couple of days, but I can't say anything about that at the moment = Another secret;
I am trying to set up a small arty business venture, but it's in the planning stages, so that's all I can say about that; and
On Wednesday, I was part of a group artist/poets meeting, as I am involved with an Ekphrasis project. Although it's not a secret, there is nothing to share yet;

so what to post is a dilemma.

I guess it's a good time to dip into the sketchbook and share a few recent sketches.

East Mersea, where, despite a cold, blustery wind, I managed a quick sketch.

A perfect excuse for a piece of cake, a new sketchbook to start.

Whilst waiting for Degas to have her check up at QVSH, I sketched this spaniel in the waiting room.

Quick trip to Italy

Last week, I had to pop over to Italy to do some banking and negotiate with builders. As always, my sketchbook was in my handbag and here are a few of the sketches I did.

Devon doodles

Trying to capture the Devon evening sun.

Having an invitation to a new fringe event in Devon, Tavistock Edge, I decided my assistant and I would have a holiday beforehand and found a cottage for us just on the edge of Dartmoor. I did lots of sketches throughout the week. I was especially fascinated with the cattle in the next field, as was Degas, so I drew them as she barked at them.

Springtime in southern Italy

This week, I had to pop over to Italy to sort out some banking and apartment issues. Whilst there, I was able to take advantage of the spring weather to do a couple of watercolour sketches.

Recording Britain Now

This is a drawing that has lurked in my head for a few years. It first emerged as a drawing for Illustration Friday's theme crooked in September 2012 (whole post here there-was-crooked-man). I wrote then

"The stile is actually an element in a idea for a drawing I've been toying with for a couple of years, so maybe now I will start on it."

Obviously it took a bit longer to get started on that drawing... not until 1st March 2014 when I thought it would be perfect for the John Ruskin Prize: Recording Britain Now. I submitted the drawing on 2nd April, and heard yesterday that it had not been selected for the shortlist. Knowing 588 artists entered does not stem my disappointment.

A week of sketches

1/5/2014

First, 23rd April and trying to paint the stormy sunset with Degas on the lead on Qantab beach looking west to the mountains.

Next, 24th April, Sultan Qaboos Highway & Ministries District from NTI building in Al Khuwair. It is unfinished, there are buildings missing in the background, as I had to go to a meeting. Then that evening, I drew the peel of an Egyptian clementine.

Finally, today 1st May, and the first of the EDiM (Everyday in May) challenges: a window. This is my kitchen window through the kitchen door.

Winter Wadi

In April, I joined the tour company The Guide Oman to cross the Hajar mountains. I did a few sketches, which I shared here, and took a lot of photos. This drawing results from that trip.

For those who don't know, winter here in Oman is really just less hot than summer with occassional rain. You can tell this is a winter picture after rain, as you can see grasses growing between the buildings.
